Welcome to the Exoneration Project’s Application System


Please follow the steps below to submit an application for representation:


  1. Check to see if the defendant is eligible to apply.
  2. Gather the information needed to fill out the application.
  3. Fill out our online application, and receive an application ID number.
  4. There is an average wait time of one year before our review will begin.
  5. Once a decision is reached, we will post the status of your application here using your ID number.

You can download, print, and send a paper application for a defendant to fill out here. Due to the volume of mail our office receives, it takes longer for our staff to review paper and e-mail applications. You may check on the status of paper and e-mail applications after one year by e-mailing intake@exonerationproject.org and providing the name of the defendant and defendant’s inmate application number (if applicable).


Please note that contacting the Exoneration Project and submitting an application does not constitute legal representation by our organization. The Exoneration Project does not agree to represent any applicants until an attorney has contacted the applicant and set up a formal retainer agreement.

Who Can Apply

The EP reviews cases of innocence for people who have gone to trial and were found guilty of crimes they did not commit. We consider postconviction cases across the nation for individuals wrongfully convicted of different types of crimes and with different sentence lengths, including cases where a defendant has served their complete sentence or plead guilty. We do not consider cases of self-defense. In order to apply for representation, your case must meet the following criteria:
